This mission is a triumph of the human spirit of early Spanish Colonial architecture. It was begun on existing foundations in 1768 and completed in 1782. The brilliant carved stone of the façade and the rose window has been attributed to Pedro Huizar. I love the folk tale that he was a lovesick Spaniard separated from his sweetheart and pinning for her as he chipped away at his glorious window. The church is one of my favorites of the San Antonio missions and I have tried to capture the sense of history that its structure conveys.
